A foil assist is an electric motor that helps you get on the foil. The motor is mounted at the top of your mast, about 20cm from your board. So once you get higher on the foil, the motor comes out of the water.
With a remote control, you control the power your propeller gives, by giving more or less ‘throttle’.
The battery is usually mounted between your board and the mast of your foil.
What makes foil assist so interesting?
The motor allows you to get to places you would otherwise not or hardly get to, or to have the right speed to surf that wave anyway! Even for wingers, the foil assist can help you start in low wind by gaining speed, getting on the foil and then sailing on with the apparent wind. The possibilities are endless, and the sense of freedom is enormous!
What should I look for when choosing a foil assist?
- Battery: the bigger the battery, the more autonomy and power, but also the heavier.
- Travel: if you want to take your foil assist with you when you travel, make sure you get a model whose batteries are allowed on the plane (modular batteries).
- Charger: fast chargers are handy, but usually also more expensive
- 2 or 3 propellers: 3 propellers gives more power, two propellers more speed, heavier persons will usually choose the 3 propeller version.
- Mounting: depending on how you transport and store your equipment, etc. , it is best to take a model that is user-friendly to assemble and disassemble.
- Finish and quality: especially important for durability.
